Facts
and Figures about Nepal |
 |
Officially KINGDOM
OF NEPAL (Nepali: NEPAL ADHIRAJYA).
Nepal is a landlocked country of southern
Asia, bordered on the north by Chinese Tibet
and the Himalayas and bounded by India to
the east, south, and west. It covers an area
of 56,827 square miles (147,181 square km). |
|
|
The capital is Kathmandu. Nepal extends for about
500 miles (800 km) from southeast to northwest
and for about 90 to 150 miles (140 to 240 km)
from north to south. It contains some of the most
rugged and difficult mountainous terrain in the
world. As a result of years of geographic
and self-imposed isolation, Nepal is one of the
least-developed nations of the world. The population
of Nepal in 1990 was estimated to be 18,910,000.
Climate
The
climate of Nepal ranges from subtropical monsoon
conditions in the Tarai region to alpine conditions
in the Great Himalayas. Annual precipitation is
between 70 and 75 inches (1,800 and 1,900 mm)
in the eastern Tarai and between 30 and 35 inches
(760 and 890 mm) in western Nepal. Flooding is
a serious problem in the low-lying areas of the
Tarai plain during the monsoon season (July-mid-October).
Average winter (November-March) temperatures vary
from 66 F (19 C) in the southern Tarai region
to 55 F (13 C) in the intermontane basins, and
summer (April-June) from 82 F (28 C) to 70 F (21
C) in the same regions.
The
People:
The
Nepalese are a very friendly people of Indo-Aryan
ancestry. They constitute the great majority of
the population. Tibeto-Nepalese peoples form a
significant minority of the country's population.
Nepali, a derivative of Sanskrit, is the official
language. Some nine-tenths of the population is
Hindu, and a small minority is Buddhist. |
