Barmer,
Jodhpur and Osian - The Desert and
Temples of Rajasthan |
| |
|
| |
| A
tiny yet lively town in sun-drenched sands a miniature
Rajasthan at its colourful best. Founded in the
13th century founder by Bahada Rao (popularly known
as Bar Rao) from whom the town is gets its name
- Barmer, i.e., the hill fort of 'Bar'. In
12th century A.D. Barmer was also known as Mallani.
|
Surrounded
by barren land with a harsh climate and
rugged terrain, Barmer is famous
for its rich crafts, dances and music. Once
on the ancient camel trade route (silk route),
the town is now the center for wood carving,
pottery, carpets, intricate embroidery work,
block printed fabrics and multi-hued traditional
costumes. Especially famous are the geometric
ajrak prints in dark shades of red and indigo,
ideal for protection against the sun. The
town is at its colourful best in March,
during the Barmer festival, which needless
to say is the best time to visit. |
|
|
| The
most fascinating part of a trip to Barmer
is the journey through rural Rajasthan. The small
villages with mud-walled houses decorated with ethnic
motifs and the colorfully attired people - a fascinating
sight indeed. |

Rao
Jodha who claimed to be a descendent of
Lord Rama, founded Jodhpur in 1459. He built
the Mehrangarh Fort, around this fortress
grew the city of Jodhpur. Among Rajasthan's
many princely settlements, Jodhpur is one
of the most distinctive. This five hundred-year-old
settlement was the headquarters of the Rathore
Rajputs celebrated for their tales of daring
and valor. |
|
| This
princely state is often referred to as "The
Blue City". Jodhpur was a major trade center
of the 16th century A.D. the fortress-city is now
the second largest city of Rajasthan. While
the graceful palaces, forts and temples strewn
throughout the city bring alive the historic grandeur,
exquisite handicrafts, folk dances music and the
brightly-attired people lend a romantic aura to
the city. |

Osian
is a small temple town or rather a large
village. Though in the medieval ages this
was a large and bustling town. Caravans
from Arabia, Persia, Afghanistan and central
Asia arrived here to trade.
Osian was also an important pilgrimage
center between the 8th and 9th centuries,
apparent from the surviving Hindu temples
of the Vaishnava, Surya (Sun) and Shakti
(mother goddess) sects. Despite the fact
that the ruling dynasty (Gurjara Pratihara)
later converted to Jainism, Osian
continued to attract Hindu devotees to its
temple of the goddess Sachiyamata. This
temple is still in use today. |
|
|
There
are 15 brahminical temples and shrines, and a
cluster of Jain temples, all built during the
Gurjara Pratihara dynasty between the 8th and
the 12th. One group of 11 temples belonging to
the early phase (8th-9th centuries) lies within
and on the outskirts of the present-day village.
The
other group belonging to the 11th and 12th centuries
is located on a hill overlooking the village.
Though small, these temples are beautifully built
and richly sculpted. A striking feature is the
variety in their design. Each temple has its original
design, planning and layout.
The stone from which these temples were built
was extracted from local quarries, and has managed
for the most part to withstand the ravages of
time. |
